The support of education is recognized by the government of Ecuador as an investment in human potential and the key to the continued growth of the work force as well as the progress of the country. To guarantee educational excellence, the constitution of the country mandates to invest approximately 30% of its budget in education. The government makes all efforts to fulfill this goal dedicating special attention for primary, secondary and higher education. The majority of Ecuadorian school-age children attend public schools. The business community is also actively involved in the country's educational system through the sponsorship of specific training programs and its input into the development of curriculum at all levels of secondary education.
Ecuador's school system including public and private institutions must work hand-in-hand with business and industry, helping to solve todays problems while graduating tomorrow leaders and demonstrating their ability to provide opportunities in higher education to meet the needs of demanding business and technology of the new century.
Universities and technical institutions must have the responsibility of producing not only massive graduates in different professions, but also in being the leading institutions in helping to shape of the development and economy of the country. They have the means, the young human capital and talents, and also they are in a unique position able of helping the private industry, since they do not have the economical means to set-up their own R&D department to conduct their own investigations, the universities and similar institutions must have the responsibility of providing to the private industry all the R&D necessary, data and now-how to start and/or continue successfully in the competitive and quality requirements of the new century markets.

Ecuador public system of higher education include the University Central, located in Ecuador's capital as one of the nation's fastest growing universities. It has become a major source of talent in areas of medicine, engineering, law and other professions. Also important is the University of Guayaquil, located in the city of Guayaquil, also a fastest growing educational institution. The University of Cuenca, located in the city of Cuenca, famous for its law school.
Technical University of Machala, UTM, located in the city of Machala, is the main source of talents for Ecuadorian agricultural and fish farming industries.

Research and development have been growing slowly until recent times when a need to create and innovate has evolved an interest in research and development in order to cope with globalization trends. To motivate young researchers Mother Nature has provided to Ecuador with one of greatest research laboratories of all times: The Galapagos Islands where Darwin studied the natural evolution of the species. Scientists and tourists visit the Galapagos Islands for its natural beauty as well as its scientific value, year round.
Natural and social sciences as well as technology have improved since the late 80's. Significant advances have been made in computer technology, petrochemicals, medicine, pharmaceuticals construction industries, as well as great gains had done in fishery research, animal husbandry, and agricultural business.
Globalization trends are encouraging to colleges and universities to address their curriculum toward the development of a high-technology industry sector based on research in such fields as biotechnology, computers and electronics as well as in the manufacturing, mining, tourism, and service industries.
